Mangalore, 18 Jun 2012: Three families on the banks of Gurupur River were shifted to safer place after the house was partially damaged due to sudden rush of waters due to heavy rainfall in that area, at Maravoor on Monday.

The incident occurred at 5.30 am, when the rushing waters damaged the retaining wall. At 2 pm, the north side house wall, constructed with mud, collapsed. The house is near to the vented dam constructed by company to provide water to nine villages nearby.

The company had not constructed protection wall which resulted in the water stored at the vented dam to rush out where the houses were situated after heavy rains.

The families of John Francis Oswald D’Souza, Isthophian D’Souza and Thomas D’Souza have been shifted to Marakada and Kavoor areas by the company contractor.

Moodushedde-Padusheede Village accountant Suresh told TOI that the vented dam work had been stopped due to monsoons and rushing water from the heavy rains caused the retaining wall to collapse as it was adjacent to the river. Another 91 cents of land belonging to Isidore D’Souza is also inundated. There are about 45 standing coconut trees which are in five ft of water,’’ he said.

Contractor Suresh Shetty said that they will repair the house after the monsoons. We have paid Rs 50,000 as advance for the families for the rented accommodation and they will be accommodated in rented houses till such time the repairs are done to their houses,’’ he said.
