Udupi: Mount Rosary Church, April 18, 2025 – On this most sacred of days, as the world observed Good Friday—a day of fasting, abstinence, and solemn prayer to commemorate the Passion and Crucifixion of Jesus Christ—Mount Rosary Church came alive with deep spiritual fervor and reverence.

From 8:30 am, the day began with a dignified and colourful procession, as the ‘Jubilee Crosses’, which had been venerated across various wards during Lent, were reverently brought back to the Church. Led by their respective Gurkars and ward members, these sacred symbols were placed on the High Altar, with a brief prayer service held inside the Church to mark the beginning of the solemn day.

At 9:00 am, the faithful gathered in large numbers on the vast open grounds of the Church for the ‘Way of the Cross’, a tradition deeply rooted in Mount Rosary’s heritage. A historical, holy, and heavy wooden Cross, preserved for centuries in the Church, was carried across 14 marked Stations—each one representing a poignant moment from Jesus’ journey to Calvary.

What made this devotion truly special was the active participation of every ward and parishioner, each one humbly offering their shoulder and hand to carry the Cross, then pass it on—creating a powerful symbol of unity, sacrifice, and shared reflection. Braving the scorching sun and heavy humidity, the faithful walked station to station, their hearts and minds immersed in prayer and contemplation.

The liturgical celebration, marked by soulful singing from the Choir team and reflective readings led by Vicar Rev. Dr Roque D’Souza, Assistant Vicar Rev. Fr Oliver Nazareth, representatives from 18 wards, and various pious organisations, focused not only on the Passion of Christ but also on contemporary human struggles, weaknesses, and social challenges.

The ceremony served as more than a religious observance—it became a spiritual journey, reminding each participant of the importance of repentance, forgiveness, and reconciliation. It offered an opportunity to relate personally to the suffering of Jesus, drawing wisdom, strength, and inspiration from His sacrifice for the salvation of humanity.

This unique outdoor Way of the Cross, a hallmark of Mount Rosary Church, continues to draw not only parishioners but also devotees from surrounding Churches. From the young to the elderly, all joined in this moving tribute to Christ’s love—walking, praying, and reflecting deeply on their own faith journey.

Concluding the day’s observances, Rev. Dr Roque D’Souza expressed gratitude to all who contributed to the solemnity and grace of the event. He also informed the faithful that the Solemn Liturgy of Good Friday, including the Veneration of the Holy Cross, would take place in the Church at 4:00 pm.
