Moodubelle, 06 June 2012: It is said that history repeats itself and also those who do not learn from history would commit the same mistakes. It seems that the Belle Grama Panchayat has learnt nothing from the past experience. Since the last six years, during the first few heavy showers the roads of Moodubelle, especially the junction in front of the main gate of St. Lawrence Church present the spectacle of a mini-lake. As the heavy vehicles pass through the slush is splattered in all directions causing inconvenience to all around including school children and pedestrians. The shop-keepers around this junction also have to do business with customers who hesitate to vent5ure into their shops due to the fear of being splattered with muddy water when vehicles pass through the pool of dirty water.
Due to heavy rains on Monday, June 4, 2012 and in the morning of Tuesday, June 5, 2012 the entire area in front of the church was converted into a mess as water could not freely pass through the drainage as the drains were clogged as they were not cleaned so as to allow the rain water to pass through smoothly. As a result the rain water collected at the centre of the junction. It is said that one bike rider slipped due to the slush.
At around 11.30 am on Tuesday, June 5, 2012, a group of volunteers led by Henry Alva, President of the Congress Local Committee assembled at the spot in order to find some solution to the problem and began the voluntary service by removing the obstacles from the drainage and making room for the rain water to flow smoothly. Mrs. Jacinta Aranha, president of the Belle Grama Panchayat, Mrs. Ida Gibba D’Douza, Zill Pancyat member, A.G. D’Souza and Shivram Salian, members of the Belle Grama Panchayat, Preetham Alva, Secretary NSUI, Mumbai University, Gopal Shetty, former president of the Local Committee, Babanna Shetty, Prashant Poojary, Benedict Alva, Mrs. Benedict Castelino, Hithalmani, the PDO, Karna Shetty and President of the Belle Riksha Union were present at the spot.

Leeladhar Kamath said that in spite of the problem being repeated every year, the Belle Grama Panchayt administration has not taken any step to solve this recurring problem. It is indeed the sorry state of affairs that the panchayat has to be reminded every year of the problem. It is common sense that prior to the monsoon if the clogged drains are not cleaned the rain water during monsoon would flow on the road and cause inconvenience to the vehicles as well as the people. When the panchayt will wake up to the basic problems of the villagers and do something that would be appreciated by one and all…?
