SMKC was started in the year 2001, by a young and dynamic priest, Rev. Fr. Cyprian D’souza, along with another dynamic leader among Konkan Community - Mr. Noel Mascarenhas, when Bishop of Mangalore Rt. Rev Bishop Aloysius Paul D’souza was on a visit to the United Arab Emirates in September 2011.

With the motto in mind “Leadership through Service”, the association organized several successful events that brought Konkan Community together in Dubai.

The main objective was to promote co-operation among various Konkani speaking communities in the UAE and to provide opportunities for developing talents in various fields and to raise funds so as to reach out to the poorest of the poor. The priority of St. Mary’s Konkan Community (SMKC) Dubai is to uplift the poorest of the poor in every field, with a more emphasis on the education field, This vision of providing higher education to the low income families through the Education Trust Fund is a most success, and as of now many engineers have passed out from the portals of St. Joseph’s Engineering College, Vamanjoor, Mangalore, India.

Today SMKC has been able to reach out to countless needy persons in U.A.E as well as in India since its inception in 2001. Many deserving students have been able to fulfill their aspirations to continue professional and vocational studies.

SMKC Dubai started “SMKC Education Trust Fund” at Bishop’s House in Mangalore Diocese in 2003 under the supervision of Charity Committee Members and has been contributing yearly to this fund.  Through this fund a total 60 students have been able to benefit and complete higher professional/ diploma studies.  The main aim of SMKC is to educate more and more children so that poor families can be uplifted to a better financial situation whereby a stronger and better society is built with love and concern.

St. Mary’s Konkan Community (SMKC) Dubai has been able to “wipe many tears and bring many smiles” on the faces of many over the past 10 + years

In the cultural field, SMKC has been able to successfully stage cultural and musical events to name a few:
Konkan Showers 2002 -   4 April  2002
Konkan Showers 2003 -  10 October 2003
Konkan Showers 2004  - 10 November 2004
Konkan Showers 2005  - 10 November 2005
Grand Konkan Showers 2006,
Rewind ’07’- ‘70”  - 25 October 2007
Desert Springs 2008 - 16 October 2008
Konkan Showers 2009 - 15th October 2009
Konkan Showers 2010 -  14 October  2010

Besides these most successful events, there are family picnics held every year and a few sports events.

SMKC Dubai has been always supporting all the musicians, singers and artists especially from India inviting them for the cultural events and show case their talents to the U.A.E. community.  Whatever revenue it generated by these highly successful events have been distributed to the community service either over here in U.A.E or in Mangalore and especially for the educational needs of downtrodden and low income people who can’t afford to educate their children.

The remaining revenue from the tomorrow’s event  shall be utilized for the same purpose.  However, for now SMKC is looking forward to the great event and invite all Konkani community to attend Konkan Showers 2012 in large numbers and enjoy the grand cultural show.
