Mangalore: Praveen elected Mayor, Geetha is his deputy

MANGALORE, 01 March 2011: The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party councillors Praveen and Geetha N. Nayak were elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Mangalore respectively on Monday. The election was conducted by the Mysore Regional Commissioner M.V. Jayanthi. Mr. Praveen defeated Appi of the Congress while Ms. Nayak defeated H. Mamatha Shenoy also of the Congress.
All the BJP councillors, except Harish K, who was among the two absentees, supported the candidature of Mr. Praveen and Ms. Nayak. The two will be 14th Mayor and Deputy Mayor and will function till February 27, 2012. Mr. Praveen told presspersons soon after his election that he would give priority to road and water works.
He would continue the initiatives taken by his predecessor Rajani Dugganna. Ms. Jayanthi began the proceedings by announcing the names of Mr. Praveen and Ms. Appi, who had filed nomination for the post of Mayor. After giving 10 minutes for withdrawal of the nomination, Ms. Jayanthi called for a voice vote.
While 34 councillors voted for Mr. Parveen, 21 supported Ms. Appi. Similar was the voting pattern in the case of Ms. Nayak and Ms. Shenoy. Both Mr. Praveen and Ms. Nayak are first time councillors and have come from Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh background.
Mr. Praveen, who is into catering business, was elected from Derabail (South) ward (ward No. 24). Ms. Nayak was elected from Mannagudda ward (ward No.28). Her husband Nityananda Nayak is a businessman and a trustee of the Venkataramana Temple. Family members of the new Mayor and Deputy Mayor witnessed the proceedings from the visitors’ gallery.
