Manipal, 29 August 2010: US Consulate General Vice Consul Graham Barker said that the higher education in the US today was not all about educating a student only academically. The idea was to ensure that every student developed into a complete person.
Speaking at the inaugural function of the 17th Twinning Programme (Engineering) of the International Centre for Applied Sciences (ICAS), a constituent of Manipal University, he said the emphasis is not only on studies but the other qualities and skills are also considered important.
City University, London, Deputy Dean Sanowar H Khan said that students had to become global citizens. Studying in other countries broadened their horizons and gave them global perspective.
Pro Vice-Chancellor of Manipal University H Vinod Bhat said that the strength of the ICAS had increased from 120 to 180 students.
Manipal University was planning to sign four memoranda of understanding (MoUs) with universities in other countries this year.
The Manipal Group of Institutions is among the first in the country to establish collaboration with foreign universities at the degree level in medicine, management and engineering. The collaborative programme is called “Twinning Programme”.
Students pursue the first two years of a degree programme in Manipal and the last two years in the US or Australia or the UK, he added.
The ICAS offers a two-year basic preparatory course in various branches of engineering.
