Manipal rape case : Court proceedings held
Udupi, 11 Jun 2015: The court proceedings of two-year-old Manipal gang rape began on Wednesday, June 10 at Udupi district and Sessions Court here.
The hearing of witnesses in the case concluded on May 26. Judge Shivashankara B Amaranna decided to have the court proceedings on June 10. Accordingly the proceeding was held in the presence of Senior Public Prosecutor T S Jithuri, accused and other advocates.
It may be recalled that a medical student of Manipal University from Kerala was abducted in an autorickshaw and was gang raped near Manipal on the night of June 20, 2013.
The police then arrested three accused - Yogesh Poojary, Hariprasad Poojary and Anand on June 27, 2013. While Yogesh and Hariprasad were autorickshaw drivers, Anand did not have any permanent occupation.
Over 100 witnesses in the case were heard by the district court. Even the victim registered her statement in-camera before the district judge.
The case had created massive protests and hit headlines in the national level media.
