Manipal, 03 August 2010: The department of Civil Engineering, MIT, Manipal University has added one more course to its masters programme, a two-year postgraduate Environmental Engineering. It was inaugurated by the University’s Vice Chancellor, Dr K Ramnarayan, at the AC Seminar Hall, MIT here on Monday. Mr Krishna J Palemar, Minister for Ecology and Environment, Port and Water Transport, who was to inaugurate the course had to leave for Bangalore.

Dr Ramnarayan told the first batch of students to set a benchmark for others who follow. "You being the first batch, must ensure that whatever you do will leave a mark," he said and added, "It is a challenge which you should live up to." Dr G.K. Prabhu (Registrar of the University), Dr Radhakrishna S Aitha (Director in-charge of MIT), and Dr Gicy M Kovoor (Head of Civil Engineering) also spoke on this occasion.

This course is an inter-disciplinary programme designed to develop environmental engineers who will be familiar with current and emerging issues relating to environmental. It can help in enhancing the research activities of the department. The course is offered to all engineering graduates of different disciplines. The job opportunities exist in all areas of environmental protection. There is a great demand for environmental engineers in the industrial sector, air pollution control, hazardous waste management, public health and safety and water supply.

Environmental impact assessment studies and design of appropriate mitigation measures for infrastructure projects are centre of attraction and prospects of this programme. Therefore, the objective of the programme is to mould young engineers to tackle the real life environmental problems and formulate solutions that are technically sound, economically feasible and sustainable. It will train the students to design, manufacture, install and operate systems that sustain and control the environment required by people and processes.
