Udupi: National Conference on Social Work Begins at St Mary’s College, Shirva

Shirva, 11 Oct 2012: A two-day national-level conference on “Redefining Social Work Profession in Multi-cultural Contexts” organized by the post graduate department of social work, St Mary’s College, Shirva was inaugurated at Saude Sabha Bhavan Hall here on Thursday October 11.
The conference was inaugurated by Dr Gandhi Doss, former professor and head, department of social work, Bangalore University.
Pramod Madhwaraj, industrialist, Malpe was the chief guest and Dr Ilango Ponnuswami, professor and head, Bharathidasan University, Tamil Nadu delivered the keynote address. Dr J C Miranda, principal, St Mary’s College, Shirva was present. Fr Stany Tauro, correspondent of the college will preside over the programme.
The conference focuses on social work profession in multi-cultural contexts and its need to redefine and reposition itself to be relevant to its times. The first expert session will be on ’Practice of Social Work Profession in Multi-cultural Framework’ by Dr Vimla Nadkarni, professor and dean, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. The panelists are Dr Santiago Joseph OFM Cap, Anugraha Institute of Social Sciences, Tamil Nadu and Dr Anand Jerard Sebastine, assistant professor in Social Work, Centre for Rural Development, Periyar Maniammai University, Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu.
The second expert session will be on ’Administration of Social Work Delivery Services in Multi-cultural Contexts’ by Dr Deepak Walokar, director, Karve Institute of Social Services, Pune. The panelists are Dr Ilango Ponnuswamy, professor and head, Bharathidasan University, Tamil Nadu and Dr Ashok D’Souza, assistant professor, Tumkur University, Tumkur.
The conference also includes paper presentations by teachers and student delegates under the broad theme of the conference. Theme-based cultural items will be presented by various colleges. More than 15 colleges are expected to participate, with over 30 paper presentations.
The valedictory will be held on October 12 at 3.30 pm. P J Rai, general manager-HR, MCF, Mangalore will be the chief guest and the programme will be presided over by Fr Stany Tauro, correspondent of the College.
