Udupi, 01 June 2011: As the Udupi Municipality monthly meeting began on Tuesday, the debate on monsoon rain consumed the whole time!. In the question answer session about one hour was spent only on rain related problems. Senior member of the administrative party Mohan Upadya expressed serious concerns on the drain gutters of the city which are not yet cleaned even though the rainy season has already started.
Another member M. R. Pai seconded and questioned that the drainage gutters are closed during widening of the roads, so where the rain water can flow this time?. He further pinched them saying, every year the same problems are repeating, then why the Officers are taking the chances of getting scolding from the public?. Members; Anandi, Panduranga, Dinakara Shetty, Indira Shekar and others accused the administration saying that the drainage gutters are not cleaned in their wards.
President Kiran Kumar said that the road widening work is being carried out by Lokopayogi department and we have told them several times to reinstate the drainage gutter, but they are not doing it, so what can we do? And expressed his helplessness and further said that in Municipality we have only one JCB and cleaning all the drainage gutters of the 35 wards will take time, but before the rainy season starts the work of cleaning and reinstating the drainage gutters will be completed, he assured.
Shyamprasad Kudwa complained that the soil which is deposited on the side of the road during widening of Udupi – Manipal road will get into the gutter once the rain starts and will block the rain water flow. But the President convinced them that the Lokopayogi department Officers have told that the soil will be cleared within 2 days. Later the debate on pollution of Kalmadi river water, problems on the Gandhi road which is dug, houses which are being constructed in Thangadagadi without leaving the set back space, collection of garbage from houses and other issues took place.
On the dais President Kiran Kumar, Vice President Bharathi Shekar and Captain Swamy were present. On this occasion the Golden Anniversary magazine “Smarana Sinchana” was released by the Editor of the magazine Mohan Upadya, Sthayi Samithi President Sumithra Nayak, Municipality President and Vice President.
Former President Dinakara Shetty complained that the street lights in front of the Udupi District Hospital is not working, which fuelled the other members to make a issue out of it on the Hospital development committee. Ravi Amin expressed his anger saying that the garden in front of the Hospital has turned into an desert without proper maintenance. We feel ashamed to say that it is in the jurisdiction of the Municipality.
President Kiran Kumar said that the Hospital development committee do not have any concern on the Hospital. They only come to the meeting and talk about their selfishness. In this committee where D.C. is the President, the Secretary from the Municipality is only for namesake and does not have any control. It is not correct to say that these facilities are to be provided from the Municipality alone, he said.
