Mangalore/Udupi, 02 February 2011: Mangaloreans have a reason to cheer, as Mangalore City Corporation has bagged second place in the Best Urban Local Body Award in city corporation category for the year 2010.
Speaking to Mangalore City Corporation (MCC) Commissioner Dr K N Vijayprakash said that though he is happy that Mangalore received the second place in the nation, there is a long way to go. The best performing ULB was selected based on actual performance as per Service Level Benchmarking (SLB) indicators. The SLB framework had 49 indicators across seven sectors including water supply, disease control, waste water management, solid waste management, roads, roadside drains and streetlight, disease control, development of parks and finances.
The assessment was carried out by the City Managers Association Karnataka (CMAK). “The revenue collection by the MCC, utilisation of funds by the MCC have also been taken into account while judging for the award,” he added.
Standing Committee on Health Chairperson Shantha said: “We are happy for getting second place. We will take a challenge to win the first place next year. A global tender will be soon called to manage solid waste management. The solid waste management proposal is perhaps unique to State which includes door-to-door campaigning, mechanical sweeping and beach cleaning. The project when implemented will be a model. At the same time, a biogas plant is also coming up in the city.”
It may be recalled that in 2010, the MCC had bagged eighth place in cleanliness. Out of the total 423 cities including 24 from Karnataka where the survey was conducted, Mysore had bagged the 2nd place while Bangalore had been pushed to 12th place.
