Malpe, 28 May 2011: “All marine living animals come under wild life act. Along with the Forest Department and Fishing Department Officers, also the local Police have the power to register the case against those who catch, kill, use and sell these prohibited marine animals or fishes” said High Court Lawyer and Wildlife Adviser Deepak. He was briefing the details on the wildlife act to the fishermen during the inauguration function of the informative notice board on prohibited fishes as per the wildlife act, organized by Forest Division of Police Department, at Malpe fishing harbour on Friday.
“If anyone is accused as per the wildlife act and is innocent, then he alone will have to prove his innocence and no police or lawyer can help him. Therefore the fishermen must be aware of the complete information on the prohibited fishes and need to be careful that they are not part of any wrong doing” Deepak said.
The notice board containing the list and pictures of the fishes which are prohibited for fishing, was inaugurated by Dasu Venkata Kharvi, an elderly tortoise preserver from Maravanthe. Kharvi was felicitated by C.I.D. (Forest Division) Police Director Chekkeroor. Upon felicitation Chekkeroor said that he and the other officers get paid for protecting the wildlife, but Dasu Venkata Kharvi is protecting the wildlife such as sea tortoise without any benefit in return. Fishermen and department officers need to get inspired from him, he said.
Like the animals such as elephant, lion and tiger, also sea tortoise, whales, saw fish gobra and other such marine animals are prohibited for fishing, do not catch them, and do not get accused by catching them, Chekkeroor appealed the fishermen.
On the dais senior leader of fishermen Hiriyanna Kidiyoor, Udupi SP Dr. Ravikumar, CID (Forest Division) SP A. R. Anvekar, Dy SP Murali and Karvar Sea Scientist Prof. Radhakrishna were present. Kaup SI Naveenchandra Jogi compeered the program.
