Body of 9-yr-old Vismaya retrieved from flooding river Chakra
Udupi, 12 Jul 2015: After two days of intense search operations by the divers fighting unfavourable weather conditions and turbulent river, the decomposed dead body of 9-year-old Vismaya was retrieved from the river Chakra on Sunday, at a place about one km from the spot where she had accidentally slipped into the flooding water body.
On July 10, Vismaya, daughter of Shekhar Devadiga and Jalaja couple, residents of Marnakatte here was walking to her school along with her mother, when she slipped off the footbridge across river Chakra and got washed away in the strong currents.
For two days, there were no traces of the girl. On Saturday, Vismaya’s footwear were found stuck in the bamboo bushes a little distance away from the accident spot. The divers were certain that the little girl had drowned and the body must have flown into the sea.
But, on Sunday, Vismaya’s body was found at a place called Nagalamane, about one kms from the footbridge.
The dead body has been sent to Kundapur government hospital for post mortem.
The incident holds mirror to the sorry state of several villages, which do not have proper connectivity. The villagers of Marnakatte had build the footbridge using wooden clubs and logs as their persistent pleas for a concrete bridge had fallen on deaf ears.
The villagers say that the loss of innocent life must open the eyes of the elected representatives.
