- Sunshine on Sunday helps road, flyover, demolition works
Bantwal, 21 June 2010: As per the order of Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj, movement of vehicles were completely banned from B C Road Circle to Polali Cross on Sunday, to facilitate the work on road widening, flyover and to drain off slush that has been causing inconvenience to the pedestrians and pave way for concreting of the road.
The illegal buildings which were coming in the way of widening the roads in B C Road were also razed to ground. Police had placed the barricade at B C Road Circle and Polali-Kaikamba entrance arch by 8 am on Sunday. As soon as the works began, the slush piled up in the highway was drained off and later concrete was laid. On the other hand, NHAI team demolished the shops using JCBs. Some shop keepers had voluntalry evicted their shops.
When Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj visited the spot at 2 pm, some shop owners tried to convince him, for which the DC said that “no concession will be given to those who have constructed buildings on government land.” MP Nalin Kumar kateel, MLA Ramanath Rai also visited the spot and interacted with the shop owners.
Only emergency services like ambulance, fire-service vehicles and the vehicles carrying marriage parties were allowed to ply on the highway. It may be recalled that the pedestrains had expressed their anguish over the slush and other such frequent problems faced on the highway recently by sowing seeds on the road. Meanwhile, the city-based vehicles from Uppinangady, Puttur and Bantwal areas were asked to take a diversion at Melkar Junction and proceed on Konaje- Tokkottu stretch. The highway wore a deserted look owing to the ban on movement of vehicles. A peepal tree which was providing shade to the passengers for the last 50 years was also felled on Sunday. As the rains gave a break on Sunday, the concreting of the road was undertaken without any problem.
Road may be closed on Monday too
The work on the road will continue on Sunday night too. “If the work on concreting of the road, demolition of buildings can not be completed by 8 am on Monday, then the ban will be extended,” said the DC. The ban on movement of vehicles ends on 8 am on Monday as per his earlier orders.
