Mangalore, 26 Aug, 2013 : A delegation of Jagotik Konknni Songhotton visited Niddodi, where it was proposed to set up ultra mega thermal power plant and met the leaders of ‘Mathrubhumi Sonvrakshanna Samiti,’ a Committee formed to wage struggle to save the fertile land from perpetrators, the Samiti president Alphonse D’Souza, Sudhakar, Joachim and others, the leaders of the Konkani Kuddmi community Poovappa Gowda and others,  and also the office bearers of Niddodi parish Catholic Sabha - Valerian Sequeira and others, on Sunday August 25.

The delegation pledged its support to the people’s struggle in opposing the ultra mega thermal power plant, proposed to be set-up in Niddodi, which would displace 8,000 agricultural families: Konkanis, Kuddmis and Christians, destroy ecology and also uproot local culture.

Jagotik Konknni Songhotton is especially concerned regarding the displacement of the Konkani Kuddmi tribals residing in that area, who would not only lose their livelihood, but also suffer the loss of their tribal social structures and their folk culture.

Jagotik Konknni Songhotton pledges to stand by the people of Niddodi in their struggle for survival.

Incidentally, the household of the President, Shri Alphonse D’Souza,is the only household among Catholics in entire Karnataka, where gumott is still played and gumott songs are still sung during social gatherings.

Jagotik Konknni Songhotton general secretary Eric Ozario led the delegation that comprised treasurer Roy Castelino, vice president Pascal B Pinto, Mandd Sobhann joint secretary Lawrence D’Souza, Konkani Prachar Sanchalan activist Vitori Karkal and Yedapadavu Kuddmi leader Gopal Gowda.
