Mangalore, 19 March 2011: On Friday afternoon, Kadri Park was bustling with park employees getting ready for the two-day horticulture exhibition to be held in the park on March 19 and 20. They were transporting batches of potted plants through the park, and arranging them in various ways.
At the entrance, workers were busy decorating the framework of a model of the World Cup, which will be covered with 8,500 red and yellow roses brought from Bangalore. The most conspicuous are the large marigolds in brilliant yellow and ochre. The bougainvillea bushes, in magenta and white, are blooming and adding to the colour in the park.
The pots have been arranged in circular formations below the “peltophorum” tree, which is in full bloom with blazing yellow flowers. The cycus tree, bamboo thicket and the Christmas tree have several potted plants around them.
The show will have 21 varieties of flowers, including hollyhock, cockscomb, zinnias, balsam, cosmos, gerbera, verbena, calendula, and “dwarf nandi battlu”, said Joe Pradeep D’Souza, Assistant Director, Department of Horticulture. Some ornamental potted plants such as coleus and medicinal herbs were part of the show.
The flowers at the show are from Kadri Park although other privately sourced flowers would be exhibited in stalls lining the side of the park.
There were 31 varieties of vegetables, including some vegetables such as beetroot, cabbage, carrots, knolkohl, which do not grow easily in Dakshina Kannada, but can be grown in December and January, he said. Vegetable seeds would be available. Farmers from different taluks would bring their best produce on Saturday.
Entry is free and seeds would be on sale, said Mr. D’Souza at a press meet in the city on Friday.
The horticulture exhibition will be inaugurated by J. Krishna Palemar, Ports and Fisheries and Dakshina Kannada district in-charge Minister. Nalin Kumar Kateel, MP, will be chief guest and N. Yogish Bhat, MLA and Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly will preside at the function.
