Udupi to impose ban on plastic abuse

Udupi, 23 July 2010: The District Administration of Udupi will impose a ban on the abuse of plastic from Aug 15, said P Hemalatha, Deputy Commissioner of Udupi. She was speaking after inaugurating a workshop on Abuse Free Plastic Ban, organized jointly by Udupi District Administration, District Industries Center and City Municipal Council, Udupi, on Thursday.
“Prior to implementing the ban, we shall be ready with some of the alternatives. By ban does not mean a mere legal ban. The public should be inclined towards its voluntary implementation”, she clarified. “If we continue to abuse plastic, the future generation will think that we lived nothing but plastic. A future excavation might find only heaps of plastics’’, she said. To prove to be a developed district, people here must have a forward looking too, she added.
With the separation of plastic waste from the solid waste the Municipal waste management plant will turn in to an income generating unit, she said. In his address, N Rajashekhar CEO of Udupi Zilla Panchayath, warned against the hazards of plastic, as its production produces chronic substances causing cancer. Dinkar Shetty Herga, CMC President, released a booklet on the hazards of plastic and provisions of plastic ban.
Gokuldas Nayak, Udupi CMC Commissioner, SG Hegade, Joint Director of District Industries Center and Ramesh Murthy were among those present. An exhibition of alternatives plastics was organised by Aasare, a home for the special children and Namma Bhoomi, a training center of working children at the programme venue.
