Power Buntakal Team Lifts Geleyara Balaga Monsoon Cricket Trophy

Padubelle, 13 June 2010: In a low scoring final match of the two days long monsoon cricket tournament, the Power Buntakal Team lifted the Geleyara Balaga Monsoon Cricket Gold Trophy and a cash prize of Rs.3333/- The Kurkal Yuvaka Mandala team was the runners up and was awarded the Geleyara Balaga Monsoon Cricket Silver Trophy and cash prize of Rs.2222/- on the penultimate day, Sunday, 13 June 2010.
In the two days monsoon cricket tournament played in the Mullachhil of Vittal Shetty, Padubelle, on 12 and 13 June 2010, all the enrolled 27 teams from various places competed with each other in heavily pouring rain, that was quite an experience for the players as well as the spectators.
On the first day, Saturday, 12 June, following the knock out matches, Power Buntakal and Pilar Prince teams played the semi-final match in which Power Buntakal scored 44 runs and secured the berth for the final match routing Pilar Prince who scored 38 runs. On Sunday, 13 June, Dawood Cricket Club of Shirva and Kurkal Yuvaka Mandala played the second semi-final match in the evening following the earlier knock out matches and Kurkal Yuvaka Mandala won the second semi-final with 29 runs as against 27 runs of Dawood Cricket Club Shirva.
There was some respite from the rains in the evening when the final match of the tournament was played between the Power Buntakal and the Kurkal Yuvaka Mandala. The Power Buntakal team won the toss and decided to bat first. In the first ball of the first over from Sandeep of Kurkal Yuvaka Mandala, the opening batsman of Power Buntakal, Nazeer was out for a duck. The wickets of Power Buntakal began to tumble one by one and in the first over, the Power Buntakal team scored only 2 runs for the loss of 3 wickets; by the end of 2nd over, the team scored only 9 runs for 3 wickets; at the end of 3rd over 12, at the end of 4th over 19 and at the end of 5th over 28 runs for 6 wickets.
In reply, the Kurkal Yuvaka Mandala scored 5 runs for the loss of no wicket in the first over; at the end of 2nd over 7 runs for the loss of 2 wickets; at the end of 3rd over 13 for 3 wickets, at the end of 4th over 14 for 5 wickets and at the end of 5th over 16 runs for the loss of 7 wickets. Thus, Power Buntakal team won the final match by 12 runs and lifted the Geleyara Balaga Monsoon Cricket Gold Trophy.

Besides the gold and silver trophies to the winners and runners up and the cash prizes of Rs.3333/- and 2222/- respectively, awards were also presented to the Best Batsman-Nazeer of Power Buntakal, Best Bowler-Sandeep of Kurkal Yuvaka Mandala, Man Of the Match-Nazeer of Power Buntakal and Man of the Series-Sandeep of Kurkal Yuvaka Mandala. Sandeep who got a wicket in the first ball of the first over was given a sponsored prize.
The awards were presented by Harish Shetty(member of the Belle Grama Panchayat), Vincent Alva, Gregory Alva, Mrs. Helen Mendonca (member of the Belle Grama Panchayat), Shankaracharya and Mahabala Shetty. The running commentary to the entire two days tournament was given by Roopesh Poojary, the President of the Geleyara Balaga, Padubelle. The referees were: Ramesh Poojary, Chandrasekhar Poojary, Prakash and Vincent Alva. The Monsoon Cricket Tournament was sponsored by a number of donors. This was for the first time that the Geleyara Balaga of Padubelle had organised the Monsoon Cricket Tournament in its 35 years of existence. It intends to organise such tournaments in future as well.

Great action photography as they happen and fantastic report of the tournament. It was as good as being there. Very good to see the youngsters play with passion even in the wet weather. This kind of exposure makes these youngsters tough and healthy.
