Inauguration of the New Academic Year of St. Lawrence Composite PU College, Moodubelle

Moodubelle, 01 June 2010: On the bright morning of Tuesday, 1st June 2010, at 10 am, students of St. Lawrence Composite PU College gathered in the College Hall with full of enthusiasm and expectation along with the guests and the Principal and staff of the institution for the grand inaugural function of the new academic year 2010-2011. Coming in the wake of the excellent performance by the students in their final examination, especially of the PU College, the function added to the colour and mirth of the entire composite college.
The inaugural function started with the prayer song “Santa Lawrencere namage nimma aasare” sung by the group of high school students and other prayers, under the direction of Fr. Arun Mendonca. Thereafter, the dignitaries occupied their seats on the dais. Fr. Joswey Fernandes, Correspondent of the parish educational insituttuions presided over the function. Mr. S.S. Sindha-Depurty Director of the PU Education, Udupi District was the Chief Guest on this occasion. Other dignitaries on the dais included- Mr. Gerald Fernandes-Chariman of the Social Justice Committe, Udupi Zilla Panchayat, Mr. Henry Fernandes-Vice President of the Parish Council, Mrs. Meera Lobo-President of the Parents-Teachers Association, Fr. Maxim Pinto (OFM) and Fr. Paul Sequeira-Principal of St. Lawrence Composite PU College.
Fr. Paul Sequeira, welcoming the guests and the students said that following the excellent results of the PU students this year, the inauguration of the new academic year brings in a lot of satisfaction and also abundant responsibility as everyone will be required to improve on these results. Fr. Paul offered a garland to Fr. Joswey Fernandes and flowers to other dignitaries as symbolic welcome. The lamp on the dais was lighted by Mr. S.S. Shindha, the Chief Guest and by other dignitaires on the dais, thus symbolically inaugurating the new academic year 2010-2011.
The new students who have taken admission to the 8th standard and First Year PUC were welcomed by the senior students offering flowers to one student each of these two classes. Similarly, all teachers and non-teaching staff were welcomed to the new academic year by Fr. Joswey Fernandes offering roses to each of them. Three newly married staff members were also felicitated during this occasion.
The results of both SSLC and Second Year PUC for the year 2009-10 was analysed. In SSLC, 97 students (56 boys and 41 girls) had appeared for the examination. Out of these, 7 students had passed with distinction (Poorna Nayak-I, Sudha Nayak, Ranjit Poojary, Lary Danzil Mendonca, Caroline Menezes, Flavita Quadros and Kevin Noronha). 33 students had passed in First Clas, 19 in Second Class and 20 in Pass Class and 18 students had failed. The aggregate result of SSLC is 81.4 per cent. Incidentally, all the girls had passed in the SSLC examination.
In the Second PUC final examination, in all three faculties, 150 students had appeared for the examination out whom 146 have been declared successful with an aggregate result of 97.03 per cent with 8 students scoring distinction marks (Pradeep M. Lobo-I, Vignesh Acharya, Prima Binisha Martis, Ranjan Kumar, Adlin Flavia Menezes, Harshitha Nayak, Renita Dafney Lobo and Chris D’Sa). 83 students obtained First Class, 34 Second Class and 21 Pass Class. Faculty wise: In Commerce all 60 students had cleared the examination with 100 per cent result (6 in distinction, 37 First Class, 16 Second Class and 1 Pass Class). In Science out of 46 students 45 students passed with 98 per cent result (2 distinction, 29 First Class, 6 Second Class, and 8 Pass Class). In Arts, out of 44 students 41 cleared the examination with 93 per cent result (17 First Class, 12 Second Class and 12 Pass Class).
Pradeep Mathew Lobo of the Second Year Commerce stood first in St. Lawrence Composite PU College and third in the Udupi District, where as Vignesh Acharya of Second Year Science stood second in the PU College. In the overall PUC results, St. Lawrence Composite PU College secured second rank in the Catholic Board of Education. A letter of congratulation to St. Lawrence PU Colelge on its excellent results from Dr. V. S Acharya was read out during the function. Also a Certificate of Merit, placing the PU College in ‘A’ Category was presented during this occasion.
The seven students who had secured distinction in the SSLC examination were felicitated by Mr. S.S. Shindha and the eight students who had scored distinction marks in Second Year PUC were honoured by Mr. Gerald Fernandes. Three students who secured the National Means Cum Merit Scholarship were felicitated by Fr. Joswey Fernandes during the inaugural function. These students are: Karthik Bhat, Shriraksha Hebbar and Assumpta Arline D’Souza. Mr. Henry Fernandes whose 55th birthday happened to be today, was felicitated by Fr. Joswey Fernandes by offering him a rose. Mr. Naveen, the Computer teacher who has left the PU College for better prospects was given a gift packet by Fr. Joswey as a token of gratitude for his service in the institution.
Belelvision has been supporting the needy students of St. Lawrence Composite PU College since some years by providing them financial assistance in the form of scholarships. This year also Bellevision has contributed 40,000/- rupees towards the scholarship for the needy students. The cheque of this amount was handed over by Fr. Joswey Fernandes to the Principal, Fr. Paul Sequeira.
In his address to the students, Mr. S.S. Shindha appreciated the excellent performance of the PU students in the last examination and aksed the students of this academic year to maintain and improve over the last years results. He said that the educational institutions are the only places where the distinction of religion, caste and class is forgotten and every one is recognised as a student.
In his Presidential message, Fr. Joswey expressed his happiness at the award of ‘A’ Grade to St. Lawrence Composite PU College and the excellent results of the PU students. He said that these things were possible due to the guidance of the Principal, Fr. Paul, good coaching by the teachers, cooperation of the non-teaching staff and the parents of the students and finally the hard work put in by the students themselves. He hoped that this year’s students too will live up to the reputation of the institution and bring laurels to St. Lawrence Composite PU College.
The vote of thanks was proposed by Mrs. Hilda Aranha. The entire inaugural function was compeered by Mrs. Chandrakala. The guests who graced the inaugural function included: Mr. Gilbert D’Souza, member of the Belle Grama Panchayat, Mrs. Reetha Mathais, member of the Udupi Taluk Panchayat, Mr. Boniface Barboza(Benny Master), Mr. Benedict Martis, President of Lion’s Club, Moodubelle, Mr. Shankar Patwal, Manager of the Syndicate Bank, Mr. Mario Mathais, Mr. Bernanrd D’Souza, Mr. Cony D’Souza, Mr. Alphonse Alva and Mr. Ignatius Monis.
