Mumbai, 23 April 2011: A 30-year-old man was found hanging from the ceiling fan of his Vikhroli house on Friday (April 23, 2011) morning. His wife and two-year-old son were also found dead, and police believe Sanjay Sen, killed the two before committing suicide. However, no suicide note was found at the site.

The owner of the house Mansi Ambedkar, who also lives at Parksite in Anand Nagar, said that she had knocked on the Sens’ door several times in the morning, as she didn’t see any of the family members step out of the house until then.

“Usually Sanjay’s wife Pooja wakes up at 4 am to fill water. But today, we saw neither her nor Sanjay. Their two-year-old son Tejas would play with my daughter. So we knocked on their door. When no one opened despite several knocks, we pushed open a window and saw Sanjay’s body hanging from the fan,” said Mansi.

Police broke open the door and recovered the bodies. They found Tejas’s body covered with a white cloth and a picture of a Hindu god lying close to his head. There was a photograph of a goddess kept beside Pooja too.

Mansi added that she didn’t know of any fights between the couple. “They would discuss a lot about their personal lives so I don’t know if there was anything else troubling them.”

DCP Sanjay Shintre of Zone VII said that preliminary investigations revealed that Sanjay first killed his wife by strangulating her with a red nylon rope and then killed Tejas in a similar manner. Finally he hanged himself using the same rope.

Police say, Sanjay owned a garment unit. Sanjay and his wife Pooja met at the garment unit four years ago and married a year later. While Pooja’s parents gave their consent to the marriage, Sanjay’s family didn’t attend the wedding. Sanjay set up his own garment unit immediately after the wedding and Pooja stayed a housewife.

Pooja’s brother-in-law Dinesh Benere said, “I met Pooja and her family at a wedding in February and she looked happy. We have no idea what led the family to take such a drastic step.” He added that Sanjay had told him that he had no family.

A case of murder and suicide has been registered against Sanjay Sen and all three bodies have been sent to Rajawadi Hospital for post-mortem.
