According to available information, around 700 years ago ancestors belonging to Rajapura Saraswat Brahmins were living in the surrounding regions of Adapadi. One of their descendants, Subbanna Nayak and Bhavani Amma had four daughters and one son. When they faced great difficulties, they worshipped the goddess Shri Durga Parameshwari who came to their rescue. The present Dharmadarshi, Shri Pundalik Nayak is the son of late Subbanna Nayak.
The Shri Umamaheshwari Shri Durga Parameshwari temple had its humble origin in 1997 when the image of the deity was installed in a makeshift Gharbaghudi. Gradually, the temple was extended with the voluntary donations received from the devotees who secured favours from the deity. Year by year the number of devotees went on increasing so also the development of the temple which has become an elaborate temple complex with various facilities and wider space for the devotees.
When this reporter visited the temple premises on 5 March 2011, the preparations for various religious and cultural programmes were getting final touches.
