Udupi, 08 December 2010: The Udupi district unit of Karnataka Komu Sauharda Vedike (KKSV) on Tuesday said that activists allegedly belonging to the Bajrang Dal had assaulted a woman belonging to a different community at Gangolli in Kundapur taluk of Udupi district on December 5 and 6.
In a memorandum submitted to Superintendent of Police Pravin Pawar here on Tuesday, copies of which were released to the press, President of the district unit of the vedike G. Rajashekhar said that Sufia, 30, had got married to Mohammed Shamsher seven years ago.
Ms. Sufia, who was originally a Hindu, had got converted to Islam after her marriage. There was no objection to this conversion from Ms. Sufia’s parents or other family members. Both Ms. Sufia and Mr. Shamsher were leading a peaceful life after their marriage. But recently, some activists allegedly belonging to the Bajrang Dal started pressuring Ms. Sufia to return to the fold of Hinduism. These activists had assaulted Ms. Sufia on December 5 and 6. Ms. Sufia had been receiving treatment at the Government Hospital in Kundapur. She had filed a complaint at the Kundapur police station.
The Superintendent of Police should immediately enquire into the matter and take appropriate action, Mr. Rajashekhar said.
On Tuesday evening, a delegation of the district unit of the vedike under the leadership of Mr. Rajashekhar met Mr. Pawar. The delegation urged Mr. Pawar to take action into the case of police atrocity against two youth Imran and Mohammed Shameem from Uchila-Polya village, and in the case of assault by alleged activists of the Bajrang Dal on Ms. Sufia at Gangolli.
