BANGALORE, 06 August 2010: On Thursday, JD(S) leaders met President Pratibha Patil and requested her not to give concurrence to the controversial Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill 2010.
Led by party bosses H D Deve Gowda and H D Kumaraswamy, the 40-member delegation comprising MLAs, MLCs and MPs briefed the President about the ill-effects of the ban on slaughter of cattle in the state. "The President gave us a patient hearing. We explained to her that the new Act would affect the food habits of people. We also told her that if implemented, it would disturb the law and order situation in the state," Kumaraswamy told TOI.
Senior leader M C Nanaiah said the new Act will have disastrous impact on society, affecting farming community and hurting the economy. "No one demanded for such a legislation. The 1964 Act of the state is sufficient to preserve cows. The BJP is enacting the new Act to appease a section of society. This will only divide the society on communal lines," Nanaiah said.
