Bangalore, 09 June 2010:  With FIFA World Cup just two days away, Google has revealed that Bangalore tops the list of Indian cities that are searching on terms related to football and the World Cup. It has also said that Karnataka pips the country’s traditional football bastions–Kerala and West Bengal–to earn the top spot for football search.

The search trends, collated from the tool called Google Insights, which the search giant has set up to study trends and patterns, has also put India as one of the top three nations in the world for making the maximum searches on World Cup and Soccer related terms.

“India ranks third after South Africa (which hosts the event) and Indonesia, leaving all the other European countries behind,” Google said in a statement on Tuesday. The searches on soccer has gone up significantly in 2010 when compared to the previous year, showing an increasing interest in the game.

“The search heat on Google has tremendously increased from what it was in the month of January. What is further interesting about this search behaviour is that worldwide searches are getting skewed towards soccer from people’s til- date-favourite, cricket,” Google said. ‘World Cup 2010’, ‘FIFA 2010 schedule’, ‘FIFA tickets’, ‘Shakira’s Waka Waka song’ (the anthem/theme song for FIFA 2010), ‘FIFA teams’ and ‘FIFA players’ are some of the terms widely searched on the internet, the statement said.

Bangalore has 100 points in Google’s ‘Search Volume Index’, defined on the basis of the optimum number of searches from a city or a region. The IT capital is followed by Mumbai, Delhi and Mahape (Maharashtra).

The company attributes Bangalore’s top position in soccer-related searches to its young and cosmopolitan residents, who have come to the city from various parts of the country. Surprisingly, Karnataka is followed in the list by Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Maharashtra, pushing the football-and-fish states of Kerala and West Bengal far below top five.

The trends from Google also indicate increasing fascination among Indians to visit South Africa using the World Cup as an occasion.
