Heavy rains lash parts of DK, Udupi

Udupi/Mangalore, 10 May 2010: Heavy rains lashed some parts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts in the last 48 hours.
Karkala taluk received heavy rains causing damage at an estimated cost of Rs 10 lakh. However, rains receded on Sunday morning. As many as 53 houses were partially damaged in Meeyaru village. About 16 houses in Karkala and 2 in Sanoor village have been damaged. The loss has been estimated to be Rs 10 lakh. Karkala received 21.8 mm rainfall in the last 48 hours. Udupi experienced a dry weather except for few hours drizzling in the evening on Sunday. Dry weather prevailed in Kundapur taluk too.
Heavy rains coupled with thunder and lightning lashed Moodbidri on Sunday evening. Owing to the thunder and lightning, the electricity supply was snapped in rural areas. The drains were filled with rain water on Sunday evening. Owing to the heavy rains coupled with strong breeze, a coconut tree fell on the mantapa of Kukke Shree Subramanya temple and was damaged partially on Saturday night.

Everyone welcomes rain to get rid of the unbearable heat of summer. But the heavy rains cause damages. Looks like the unsteady weather and the natural calamities are occurring with increasing frequency now a day which is more of man made by polluting the environment than by nature. |
