Girls outshine boys in ICSE, ISC exams

New Delhi, 18 May 2011: Girls have once again done better than boys in the ICSE (Class X) and ISC (Class XII) examinations conducted by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations, New Delhi. The results for both ICSE and ISC were announced on Tuesday.
In Class X exams the pass percentage of girls is 99.15 per cent while 98.19 per cent boys managed to clear the hurdle. The overall pass percentage is at 98.61, up by 0.30 per cent from 2010. A total of 67,144 (98.19 per cent) of the boys passed the Class X examination compared to 53,507 (99.15 per cent) of the girls.
The scenario is the same in Class XII where 98.40 per cent girls passed as compared to 96.30 per cent boys. The overall pass percentage is at 97.24, up by 0.13 per cent from 2010. In Class XII 30,540 (96.30 per cent) boys managed to clear the exam while 25,363 (98.40 per cent) girls were declared successful.
A total of 1,22,347 (68,382 boys and 53,965 girls) took the Class X examinations from 1,638 schools. The maximum number of students who took the Class X examination was from the Northern region comprising the states of Uttaranchal, Uttar Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh and Delhi & NCR.
Northern region had 46,200 students appearing for the exam with 45,166 (97.76 per cent) managing to clear it. Eastern region saw 43,118 students taking the exam followed Southern region (20,500 students), Western (12,326) and foreign region (203).
The Southern region has the best pass percentage at 99.72 per cent, followed by Western region which has a pass percentage of 99.63 per cent and Eastern region saw 98.70 per cent students clearing the exam. All students from the foreign region managed to pass.
South India also has the highest percentage of girls at 48.77 per cent who had appeared in the examination.
A total of 3,894 Scheduled Caste candidates took the examination achieving a pass percentage of 97.64; 97.78 per cent of 3,868 Scheduled Tribe candidates passed while 98.49 per cent of 13,999 Other Backward Classes candidates cleared it.
In Class XII 57,487 (31,712 boys and 25,775 girls) students sat for the examination from 764 schools. In Class XII, too, Southern region has the best pass percentage at 98.28 per cent (out of 4,465 students) followed by Western region at 97.80 per cent (2,779 students). Eastern region saw 97.46 per cent students (out of 23,723 students) clearing the exam with 96.80 per cent students out of 26,363 from the Northern region managing to pass. All 157 students from the foreign region cleared the exam.
The ICSE examination was conducted in 62 written subjects of which 23 are Indian languages and 10 are foreign languages while the ISC examination had been conducted in 51 written subjects of which 14 are Indian languages and seven are foreign languages and one classical language.
