Udupi: Incessant rains cause situation ready for floods

Udupi, 28 June 2011: Rains have been pouring from Sunday night through until Monday night in Udupi district causing situation ready for flood. Almost all rivers in the district are already started to overflow and the residents on either side of the river are in the fear of flood. The continuous rains have disrupted the daily routine life of people and also the business activities.
Udyavara river is already filled and is overflowing. In low areas such as Mattu and other villages the water has already started to sneak in. Swarna river also has already filled and if the rains continue then villages such as Shiroor, Baje, Pareeka and other places will be flooded. Similarly Madisalu river of Uppur is also already full and flowing at danger level.
In Gundibail area of Udupi city, with the construction activities of the buildings on either sides of the roads have blocked the water flow and has caused fear of unnatural flood. On Monday Gundibail – Kalsanka road was filled with one feet high water seriously causing difficulties for the movement of vehicles and people. Similarly the water filled in Shiribeedu and Malpe low level areas causing difficulty for the movement for some time.
The weather department has forecasted heavy rain in the next 24 hours. For this the district Administration has made preparations to face the flood situation. Already district control centers have been opened and boats from Fire brigade and Red Cross have been made ready for the situation. Deputy Commissioner has already called a meeting and instructed the concerned Officers to be prepared to perform any kind of duties during flood situations.
Throughout the district about 17 houses were damaged resulting approximately Rs. 2,44,000 loss.
In Kundapura Taluk total 12 houses are partly damaged. With the heavy rains and wind on Sunday the house of Girija Poojarthy of Kumbashi has partly collapsed with a loss of approx. Rs. 40,000. Other resident of Kumbashi too had damages and loss; Shankara (Rs. 5,000), Ganesh Prabhu (Rs. 10,000), in Gopadi Grama; Krishna (Rs. 5,000), Vanaja (Rs. 2,500), Gulabi (Rs. 2,000), Krishna (Rs. 3,000), Ananda Marakala (Rs. 5,000), Chennamma (Rs. 3,000), Rama Marakala (Rs. 2,500), Radha Gopadi (Rs. 3,000), Honnamma Ganiga (Rs. 10,000) and in Kattelturu Grama; Girija (Rs. 3,000) had her house roof, tiles and walls damaged.
In Udupi Taluk 5 houses are damaged. In Belurujeddu Grama Raviraja’s house is damaged by the coconut tree falling with a loss of Rs. 30,000, in Anjaru Grama Sanjeeva Nayak’s house is damaged by fall of a tree with a loss of Rs. 2,000, In Heruru Grama Gopi Poojary’s house roof is damaged by fall of a tree with a loss of Rs, 30,000, Balkudru Grama Anantha Nayak’s house is damaged by fall of coconut tree with a loss of Rs. 22,000 and Shirvapadavu Grama Girija Poojary’s house roof flown off with the wind resulting a loss of Rs. 50,000.
