Kundapura: Youth killed, many injured in Bus accident at Halady

Kundapura, 19 June 2014: A young passenger died and several others injured after a private bus plunged into 20-feet deep gorge at Maraluchikku temple, near Halady bridge here on Wednesday June 18 morning.
The deceased has been identified as nineteen-year-old Sumanth, a resident of Shankaranarayana gram panchayat who was working in Hebri, Karkal taluk.
The bus was plying from Siddapura to Udupi town, when the main axle broke near Halady bridge and the bus swerved off the road and plunged into gorge, killing the youngster instantly and injuring nearly 15 passengers.
The bus was filled with students and daily office goers who were anxious to reach their destinations in time.
The injured were shifted to hospitals different hospitals at Manipal, Kundapur and Halady, depending on the nature of their injuries. The bus driver was critically injured and was taken to KMC Hospital, Manipal.
The angry passengers alleged that the mishap took place because of the recklessness of bus operators who don’t maintain their buses with periodic maintenance instead play on the life of innocent victims.
The locals prefer state authorities run KSRTC buses as they have mandatory periodic checks carried out their depots and other passenger safety measures.
Shankarnarayana police registered a case in this regard and investigations are underway.
