Udupi, 20 May 2013: ‘I will not become puppet of mega industries,’ said the newly-elected MLA Vinay Kumar Sorake, the Congress candidate who contested from Kaup legislative constituency soon after he was announced winner during the poll-count here on Wednesday May 8.
Meanwhile, MLA Sorake has the challenge ahead as he is now a minister to honor his commitment!
Udupi Power Corporation Limited (UPCL) – the coal based power plant that was set up in the limits of Kaup legislative constituency is a major cause of worry due to widespread environmental destruction and health hazard. The wind energy generating units are also coming up, besides the works on national underground reserve of crude oil is underway. The cement majors are interested in setting up industries. The proposal for setting up of Special Economic Zone (SEZ) for petrochemical is before the concerned authorities. The multi national companies have already set their eyes on the constituency. The several thousands of acres of farmlands, forest, residential localities are already acquired for industrial purpose. The locals are up in arms in this regard.
The minister Vinay Kumar Sorake staged struggle against UPCL when he was the Member of Parliament in Udupi. The cased filed against him are coming up for hearing even now.
The environmentalists allege that the elected representatives of undivided Dakshina Kannada districts are hand in glouse with multi national companies, while a few are puppets, allege environmentalists.
It’s owing to this allegation; minister Sorake had announced that he will not be a puppet of industrialists. The minister Sorake has a challenge now to honor his commitments not only for his constituency, not the least to the entire Udupi district. One has to wait and see!!!
