Udupi, 28 November 2011: In the last one year the numbers of theft cases have reduced. Last year there were 369 theft cases reported and this year so far 270 cases have been registered, said District Superintendent of Police Dr. Y.S. Ravikumar. He was briefing in the security awareness workshop jointly organized by District Police Department and District Jewelers Association.

Though the numbers of theft cases are reduced this year the value of the goods stolen is more. In 2010 the value of the goods stolen is Rs.2,00,27,512 and out of which the Police have succeeded in the recovery of the goods of value Rs. 66,09,146. This year the value of the goods stolen is Rs. 2,56,38,912 and out of which the Police have succeeded in recovery of the goods of value Rs. 1,93,31,521, he said.

In the district mostly the night robbery and normal theft takes place. In last year 120 night robberies and 127 normal thefts have taken place. In this year 100 night robberies and 98 normal thefts have been registered. In 2010 there were 6 major robberies and 40 looting cases have been registered. This year 1 major robbery and 24 looting cases have been registered. Last year 38 day robberies and 38 house robberies were registered. This year 27 day robberies and 20 house robberies have been registered, he said.

Overall in the district in last year 369 various crimes were registered and this year so far 270 crimes have been registered, he said. In Kota  Jewelry shop case 4 persons have been arrested, who had been part of more than 42 robberies in all over the state and the stolen goods worth 12.50 lakhs rupees has been recovered from them. In Udupi chain robbery incidents have increased and 3 persons have been arrested, who are part of 15 incidents, said SP.

There are many gold jewelry shops in Udupi and they are not taking enough care on security, which makes it difficult for the investigation of the robberies. The jewelry shop owners should mandatorily install siren, safe locker and CC camera – TVs. This will help to control and to investigate the robberies. While locking the shutters of the shop in addition to the two locks on the sides, in the middle also locking arrangement should be adopted, which can minimize the breaking of locks, he said.

Also, if there are 4 – 5 shops together, they can appoint a watchman, he said. Earlier the land developers and builders were getting threat calls and now it is observed that even the jewelry shop owners are also getting such calls, for which care should be taken. They should note down the phone numbers of their relatives who are abroad and should take only their calls and should avoid other calls. Also if they find suspicious on any local calls that should be informed to local Police, he said.

On the occasion, Additional Superintendent of Police Venkateshappa and Udupi District Jewelers Association President Jaya Acharya were also present.
