Udupi, 07 Sept: Malpe: As the festivals of Ganesh Chaturthi and Monthi Festh are being celebrated on September 7 and 8 respectively, the demand for vegetable dishes is high during these festivals among the Hindus and Christians. In this regard, in order to further help the local farmers, on the initiative of Fr. Denis D’Sa, Parish Priest of St. Annes Church, Thottam has organized a two-days long sale of Organic vegetables through stalls on September 6 and 7 in which the local farmers and vegetable growers could sell their vegetables directly to the customers without the middlemen.
Taking advantage of this arrangement, several farmers of Thottam, Thenkanidiyur, Badanidiyur and Malpe who had grown various types off vegetables by using organic fertilizers brought them for sale. Apart from Thottam church, members of neighboring churches also bought pure organic vegetables.
St Ann’s Church along with Catholic Sabha of the church unit and Sarvadharma Samnavi Samiti had joined hands in this unique effort. In these stalls vegetables were available directly from farmers to consumers at very reasonable prices, only cash transactions were allowed and no digital payment system was permitted. Customers were asked to bring eco-friendly bags to carry the vegetables.
Fr Denis D’Sa said that festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi and Monthi Festh have deep connections to the environment. The organic vegetable market aimed not only to support local farmers but also to encourage the cultivation of organic produce, giving consumers the opportunity to purchase directly from growers.
Gopal K from Badanidiyur who participated in this venture expressed his gratitude for the initiative taken by Fr. Denis D’Sa and St. Anne’s Parishioners. He said that for many years he has been growing vegetables using organic fertilizers at home and supplying them to local stores, but he was not receiving fair prices. Transportation to distant markets involved additional costs, but this local vegetable market has provided him with better rates and he was thankful to the organizers.
St. Anne’s Parish, Thottsm under the leadership of Fr. Denis D’Sa has set an example which may inspire many other parishes to undertake similar ventures in the coming years.
