Mangalurum 03 Apr 2022: The life experiences shape our personality. Therefore, one should experience different facets of life that comes on our way,’ said Dr Geetanjali Bhatnaban, pro-vice chancellor of Gitam University, Vishakhapatnam and former director of AIIMS, Bhuvaneshwar.

Dr Geetanjali was the chief guest of Graduation Day celebration of Father Muller Medical College and other institutions under Father Muller Charitable Institutions (FMCI), Kankanady, here on Saturday April 2.

She also said, ‘The basic education is denied for girls in far-flung areas across India. Meanwhile, I was set free because of education that my parents bestowed on me about 4 decades ago. Today’s students are fortunate to have luxury of training, skilling but Indian noted mathematician Ramanujan had dearth of notebooks who would use slate to do mathematical calculations and rub by his elbow to go to next formula,’ said Dr Geetanjali.

She also expressed concern over self-centeredness of youth, instant gratification and communication difficulties as the families that they are nurtured have not taught them the importance of sharing. Even helping someone without expectation gives immense happiness to one who does it, added Dr Geetanjali.

She also advised the granduands to embrace change and take better care of themselves and be grateful to have achieved their goal in life.

Karnataka HC former judge Justice John Michael D’Cunha was the guest of honor, who was a first rank holder in LLB from Calicut University and gold medalist said, ‘I was a lawyer for 17 years and judge for 19 years. The judges/nurses/doctors make crucial decisions at times that would do wonders or blunders. The judge is protected by law for error of judgment and medics for negligence. Both try their best to preserve human life and the services of competent doctors are crucial in a critical situation,’ said Justice D’Cunha.

In his presidential address, Dr Peter Paul Saldanha, bishop of Mangaluru diocese who is also the chairman of FMCI said, ‘Human being is a mystery. The medics can treat a person for physical ailments but the studies show the patient needs at times spiritual assistance to recover fully. The pent up anger, negativity and unforgiving the aggrieved also has its role in both physical and mental ailments. The doctors who are graduated today ought to follow the principal of FMCI founder Father Augustus Muller – Heal and Comfort. The Covid times have given us time to introspect on our lives that has brought us close to brotherhood as the Corona virus is a contagious disease and our survival depended on helping each other,’ said bishop.

He also said that what the graduands learn in their medical studies is just 10 percent and they will learn more once they begin practice. He urged them to be humane with emphathy as many times the patient just needs a long hearing that may heal his both physical and mental ailments through medication and psychological assistance.

Dr Mayuri G Bhat bagged top student award and gold medal. Viola Thomas Fernandes, Veena Melisha Fernandes, Kesia Elsa Varghese M Ginika Johny and Maclin George Lewis bagged the gold medals.
