Moodubelle, 01 June 2011: In anticipation of the monsoon, heavy rains and lightening and thunder in the night of May 31 and June1 2011 caused considerable damage to a house at Kappandakariya and inundated the patch of road in front of the church causing great inconvenience to the people. The rains accompanied with lightening and thunder continued from about 10 pm on May 31 to 4 am on June 1, 2011. Electric supply was cut off which resumed only at 9 am on Wednesday, June 1.
Lightening struck the house of Samraya Acharya of Kappandakariya. Harischatndra Acharya and his wife, Lakshmi Acharya and children Nitin and Chetan who were sleeping inside the house were woken up with the deafening sound of the thunder which caused cracks on their walls and debris began to fall over them. However, fortunately, no major injury was caused to the inmates. The electric meter box was severely damaged and the wires got burnt. The impact of the lightening was so much that the electric pole got damaged at three places.
The problem of the patch of road in front of the Church which is junction for four roads has been an eye sore for over 3 to 4 years. Bellevision had highlighted the condition of this patch of road many times. However, no lasting solution has been found so far by the local authorities. Just after one nights heavy rain, the slush has gathered in such a way that people and vehicles find it extremely difficult to negotiate this patch of road. As the schools have already started, students find it quite difficult to walk through this road.
It seems that the blockage of drains by the side of the roads have led the rain water to overflow on the road which has resulted in the deposit of lose mud causing slush. Anticipating the monsoon, the local authorities should have cleared the drainage so as to make provision for the rain water to flow within the drains. However, in spite of earlier experience, it seems that no lessons are being learnt and the problem on this patch of road remains unsolved. Having seen what one night’s rain could do, the local authorities at least take appropriate action and spare the people from wading through the slush.
Dear Grama Panchayath members, please join hands with the public and start Shramadana, thus clean the open drains. This is not new, during the first rain of the reason this happens. Henceforth take proper precautionary measures and resolve the problem once for all.
