Mangalorean.Com
Udupi, 30 April 2011: An overpass on national highway 66 (earlier known as NH17) is being constructed at the Kinnimulki welcome arch with a view to relieving the junction of traffic jams and avert accidents.
The junction has become a hazardous spot as vehicles, mainly the buses, arriving from Mulki and Mangalore direction tend to change lanes without bothering about the traffic from the other side. Many vehicles arriving from Udupi city via Kinnimulki arch also join the highway through the gate without the drivers caring to stop.
District magistrate and deputy commissioner P Hemalata has issued orders that the following directions be followed:
Vehicles from Kannarpadi and Kutpadi to Udupi:
Kannarpadi I cross (behind Bharat residence), Ambalapady, Ajjarkad, Jodukatte, Taluk office, Kavi Muddana Marg, to city.
Vehicles from Udupi to Mangalore:
Take the reverse direction of above route up to Panchakshari Shiva Bhajana Mandir, take left and at the welcome arch at Kinnimulki turn right through the specially created underpass and proceed to Balaipade.
Balaipade to Kinnimulki track will be ONE-WAY. Vehicles from Mangalore to Kundapur and vice versa can keep the national highway, skipping Udupi city.
Vehicles from Udupi city to Udyavar and Mangalore shall take the old Kinnimulki road to Balaipade. Vehicles from Mangalore to Udupi shall proceed from Balaipade straight to Ambalapady, turn to Ajjarkad, and proceed via Jodukatte, taluk office towards city.
All buses and vehicles Kundapur direction to city shall turn at Karavali junction and proceed via Bannanje, Shiribeedu, city bus stand, Airodikar junction to the city. All KSRTC buses shall take the Bannanje, Shiribeedu, Brindavan junction in front of city bus stand, mosque junction, Sairam junction, Sanskrit college junction, Hanuman junction and then take righto KSRTC bus stand.
The proposed overpass is expected to ensure smooth flow of traffic on the highway. The project is expected to take about six months. During this period, a few traffic diversions are being made. They will come into force effective April 29 and remain so for six months.
