Moodubelle, 03 February 2010: In order to encourage and motivate the students to study well and to save their time in commuting to the school and back home so that they devote more time for studies, the Government of Karnataka had introduced a scheme to distribute cycles to the 8th standard students throughout the state. This scheme was introduced four years ago. In the first year, the girl students of the 8th standard whose family was in possession of the below poverty line (BPL) ration card were given the cycles. In the next year both girls and boys below the poverty line were considered for the scheme. Since last year all the students of the 8th standard, irrespective of their economic status have been benefitting from this scheme.
The function to distribute cycles under the Karnataka Government scheme to the 8th standard students of St. Lawrence High School, Moodubelle was held on Tuesday, 2nd February 2010 at 3.30pm in the Pre University College Hall. Fr. Paul Sequeira, Principal of St. Lawrence Composite Pre University College, Moodubelle welcomed the guests- Mr. Gerald Fernandes, Member of the Udupi Zilla Panchayat, Mr. Shashidhar Wagle, President of the Belle Grama Panchayat, Mr. Devdas Hebbar, Pesident of the Old Students Association and Mr. Benedict Martis, President of the Lions Club of Moodubelle.
Mr. Gerald Fernandes as the representative of the Government of Karnataka explained the reason for the distribution of the cycles for the 8th standard students. He said that the students should make use of the time saved in travelling to and from the school by using the cycles for their studies.
The function was attended by the students of the 8th standard, their parents and the teaching and non-teaching staff members. Later, cycles were formally handed over by the Principal, the guests and the teachers to some of the students and their parents. There was a great sense of satisfaction and happiness among both the students and their parents.
