Laparoscopic pancreatic surgery spares scars in a 16 year old
Media Release
Mangalore, 02 February 2011: A 16 year old girl, was suffering from recurrent episodes of abdominal pain for the past four years. She was treated elsewhere earlier before being referred to Dr.Vijay Ramachandran, Surgical Gastroenterologist, Hepatopancreatobiliary & Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeon. After evaluating her with a CECT Scan & MRI of the Abdomen, the patient was found to be suffering from Pseudocyst of Pancreas, a complication of Acute Pancreatitis. The likely cause for her pancreatitis was the presence of Microliths i.e Small stones < 5mm in the gallbladder. Dr.Vijay performed a procedure called Laparoscopic Cystogastrostomy and Cholecystectomy. In this procedure, which was performed entirely through Laparoscopy, a communication was created between the stomach and the pseudocyst of the pancreas and the gallbladder containing microliths was removed.
According to Dr.Vijay, the advantages of this procedure especially in such a young girl, are the avoidance of ungainly scars on the abdomen, reduced pain, quick postoperative recovery and early return to activity. The advantages of the cosmetic aspect of the procedure in an adolescent girl cannot be overemphasized. Moreover, recurrence of pancreatitis was prevented by removing the gallbladder in the same sitting. Performing this procedure requires skills in advanced laparoscopic surgery and surgery of the pancreas according to Dr.Vijay. The team of doctors also included Dr.B.V.Tantry Consultant Gastroenterologist and Dr.Shivananda Prabhu, Consultant Surgeon.
Dr.Mahesh Inder has stated that KMC Hospitals will always strive to deliver best of the services to the people.
