Udupi: Manipal College of Nursing celebrates silver jubilee

Udupi, 22 Jan 2015: The curtains on the year-long silver jubilee celebrations of Manipal College of Nursing (MCON), Manipal will come down with a two-day international conference, the annual day and the alumni meet this week-end. The celebrations began last year with an international symposium on Gerontology and continued to be engaging with lecture series, seminars, research methodology workshops, felicitations and other events throughout the year.

 

 

The international conference, scheduled for January 24 and 25, 2015 will be preceded by two pre-conference workshops on January 23, 2015. The Silver Jubilee and Annual day is slated for January 24, 2015. “It was an eventful year in many ways”, said dean of MCON Manipal, Dr Anice George while informing media about the activities.

 

“During the course of the year, we’ve had a number of lectures by the alumni, which proved useful to the students and faculty. A silver jubilee documentary on our college was made, research methodology workshops were held, endowment fund for research was established and so also a fund for monthly morbidity clinics. One of the interesting things to happen during the year was the launch of a journal titled ‘Manipal Journal of Nursing and Health Sciences’ and we also felicitated distinguished ex-faculty, staff and advisors of MCON,” Dr Anice said.

 

“It was a wonderful year and we will end it on a very positive note,” she remarked. “There was reason to rejoice when about two months ago we got information that Manipal College of Nursing, Manipal was one of the four nursing colleges in the country to be recognised by the Singapore Nursing Board. Only three other institutes in the country, AIIMS Delhi, CMC Vellore and College of Nursing Trivandrum have been recognized by the Singapore Board,” she said and added, “In 2012 our college was ranked third in the country in a survey by The Week”. Our College gets these recognitions out of 1438 INC recognized Nursing Colleges in India.

 

About the programmes to be held in the week-end, Dr Anice said that the Karnataka Minister for Health and Family Welfare Mr UT Khader would be the chief guest at the inauguration of the International Conference on January 24, 2015 at the Dr T M A Pai Hall at 9 am. The theme for the conference is, “Evidence informed Practice: An Approach to Healthcare Reform”. Around 600 national and international delegates will be attending the conference.

 

The pre-conference workshop will have two parallel sessions. One is on “Research Methods” by Dr Denise F Polit, Prof. Griffith Health Institute, Griffith University, Queensland as the main resource person, and the other is on “Systematic Reviews” to be handled by Dr Kader Parahoo, Professor, Institute of Nursing and Health Research, University of Ulster, Coleraine, Northern Ireland.

 

And, for the Silver Jubilee as well as the Annual Day function to be held at KMC Greens, Prof. Vasudha Kamat, Vice Chancellor, SNDT Women’s University Mumbai will be the chief guest.

 

Giving a brief about the college itself, Dr Anice said, “Manipal College of Nursing (MCON) a constituent of Manipal University, Manipal was established in 1990 and today is one of the leading institutions in the country. It has strived to achieve its mission, ‘Excellence in nursing education, health care services, research and commitment to human development’. “We now look forward to doing better in the years to come,” she concluded.

Manipal College of NursingManipal (MCON) was established in 1990 under the efficient  leadership of Prof. P. P. Bhanumathi, who was appointed in 1989 as Principal  to start the  College of Nursing. Manipal College of Nursing was  under the Medical college wherein Dr. P.L.N Rao was the  Principal, KMC Manipal .With the support of herdedicated staff, she  laid the foundation for its magnificent growth. The College was nurtured byDr.AparnaBhaduri, Professor & PG Coordinator. She was instrumental in starting the postgraduate programme (MSc and M.Phil ) in Nursing.The college was taken to great heights later by  DeansDr.RatnaPrakash, Dr.Anice George and other staff  who have worked to shape this great institution.

 

The  programsoffered by MCON are approved by the Indian Nursing Council (INC).MCON is currently affiliated to Manipal University and  is the first nursing institute in India as well as the first educational institution at Manipal to be certified by ISO 9001:2000 in 2005.

 

The students from MCON have excelled in nursing pactice, education, research and have taken up challenging jobs in different hospitals in India and abroad like nurse practitioners, nurse educators, nurse counsellors, school health nurses, research consultants/scholars, Principals/Deans’of nursing institutions and general managers/directors of the hospitals.MCON graduates are trained to be well qualified  professionals and are  recognized widely  nationally and internationally.

 

Mr Dileep Kumar, President, Indian Nursing Council, in his messageon the  occasion of silver jubilee of MCON said that it is a matter of great pride that the college has made consistent progress in academic and co-curricular  activities and has become one of its kind in India in providing undergraduate  toM.Phil and PhD in  faculty of Nursing. This is a tribute to standard of  excellence in academics and commitment to quality education and also the excellent  support  and commitment of the management.

Silver Jubilee and Annual Day Celebrations

MCON is celebrating its glorious existence of 25 years and Annual day on  24thJanuary 2015 inKMC Greens,Manipal  at 5.30 pm. Prof. VasudhaKamat, Vice Chancellor, SNDT women’s University, Mumbai will be  the chief guest. Dr. Josephine Little Flower, Nursing Advisor to Government of India and Dr.LathaVenkateshan, Principal, Apollo College of Nursing, Chennai  will be the guests of honor. Dr.Ramdas M.Pai , Chancellor, Manipal University will preside over the function. There will be presentation of the awards to students/faculty, felicitations, release of the journal, college magazine, silver jubilee documentary and college anthem followed by cultural programs by students and alumni.
