Udupi: Stolen statue recovered

Udupi, 07 November 2010: In a swift action, Karkala police nabbed a man and recovered a stolen panchaloha statue of Jain deity Sri Adinatha Swamy valued at Rs 10 lakhs, from Hospet. Udupi SP Pravin Madhukar Pawar, speaking to mediapersons at his office on Saturday, said on October 29, Vidyakumar Bunnal of Karkala had lodged a complaint that on the night of October 28, some unknown culprits broke open the main door of Sri Nemeshwara Adinatha Swamy Jaina basadi, Huriyangadi, Karkala, and stolen the 140-kg panchaloha statue, which is approximately 500 years old.
During the course of investigation, it was revealed that the accused had used a Maruti Omni van bearing number KA 17 M 5429. Police team headed by Ravi, PSI (crime) Karkala town nabbed its driver Parashurama alias Parashu of Harihar. On interrogation he admitted that he committed the theft along with two others and the statue was in possession of one Narasinga Joshi at Hospet.
Police went to Hospet and recovered the statue worth Rs 10 lakhs. Other two accomplices are absconding. Udupi SP Pawar has announced a cash reward of 10,000 to the police team.
