Udyavara, 31 October 2010: As the Highway Department has given clearance for the repair works of the National Highway 17 near the Udyavara bridge, the road repair works caused obstruction to traffic flow. Vehicles on both sides were stranded on the highway. The asphalt (tar) on some of the spots on the road near the bridge used to peal off in spite of repeated repair due to rain which needed immediate repair.
Since the contractor has neither taken any assistance from the local police sub station nor assigned any dedicated traffic controller of his own, the movement of vehicles has been very difficult in that area. As a result, a long queue of 2 to 3 kilometers of traffic was held up on the road for a very long time.
Every time when there is road works at Udyavara and Pangala bridge areas, this kind of traffic obstruction is being faced by the vehicle drivers. The highway department vehicles were also parked on the roads which too contributed to the traffic obstruction, hence the passengers passing through the highway had to struggle until Saturday evening.
This traffic obstruction near Udyavara bridge also delayed the vehicle of State Minister of Higher Education & Planning Dr. V. S. Acharya on Saturday who was passing through in his car and had to wait for some time among the stranded vehicles. The local police then assisted in the movement of traffic and the Minister could pass through. Since the traffic was stranded on the highway for couple of hours some drivers had to face more problems as they were out of petrol and the near by petrol bunk was also closed.
