Mangalore, Aug12, 2014 : Sahyadri Samrakshana Sanchaya - a group of environmentalists celebrated Raksha Bandhan in a unique way by tying Rakhis’ to the trees in the city and vowing to protect them.
The mayor Mahabala Marla after inaugurating the programme here on Monday August 11, said, A Committee will be formed by civic body to protect the trees in city limits. The saplings will be planted in vacant places and in the dividers. The civic body is committed to conserve the landscape, said mayor Marla.
Sahyadri Samrakshana Sanchaya convener said, ‘The idea of Vriksha Bandhana struck when a tree was chopped off recently because it obstructed the clear view of a hoarding in Balmatta, here. It’s rather more important to nurture a plant than plant a sapling. Today, we will be tying the Rakhis’ to 73 trees and we have convinced many shopkeepers in city to nurture them.’
The Rakhis’ were tied to the trees besides the road at Balmatta, Falnir, Kankanady, Valencia and Mary Hill.
Nitte University Professor Dr Murali Mohan Choontaru, Madhav Ullal and many members of the Sanchaya were present on the occasion.
The organisers used the unique way of beating the drums in distributing the handbills to attract people towards this unique programme instead of using mikes and sound systems.
