Margaret Lavina Fernandes receives Ph.D. Social Work

Bangalore/M’Belle, 28 December 2014: Dr Margaret Lavina Fernandes, daughter of Mrs. Cecelia Fernandes and Late Felix Fernandes from Moodubelle, Udupi District, Karnataka was conferred Ph.D in Social Work in the Faculty of Social Sciences by His Excellency, K Rosaiah, the Governor of Tamilnadu, in the 31st Convocation of Bharathiar University, Coimbatore on 22 December 2014. The chief guest was renowned scientist Dr. Shivathanu Pillai, Father of BrahMos missile. The guest of honour was Dr H. Devaraj, Vice Chairman, University Grants Commission, New Delhi. Honorable Minister for Higher Education Shri P. Palaniappan, Government of Tamilnadu, Pro-Chancellor of the university presided over the convocation. Dr James Pitchai, Vice Chancellor, presented all the Ph.D candidates to receive their degrees and insignia.
The topic of research of Dr. Margaret Lavina Fernandes for her Ph.D thesis is ‘Children in need of care and protection’ (CINOCAP) in residential settings of NGOs in Bangalore Urban District.’ She has explored the various familial, social and educational causes of children from low socio economic background getting into institutions for care and protection. The behavioural aspects of children and their adjustment factors in residential settings have been studied in depth. This doctoral research was guided by Dr Janet Parameshwara, Head of Social Welfare, Kidwai Memorial Institute of Oncology, Bangalore. Dr Lavina has done her M.Phil in the area of ‘Socio-economic status of tribal women of Nilgiris’. She did her Master’s Degree in Social Work (MSW) with Community Development specialization from School of Social Work, Roshini Nilaya, Mangalore during 1999-2001.
Dr. Margaret Lavina Fernandes has several years of experience in post graduate teaching, academics, social science research and special expertise in the area of qualitative research. Her research paper on grounded theory is published in the renowned high indexed International Journal of Qualitative Studies on Health and Well Being. She is also actively involved in various research projects as consultant and principal investigator and trains medical and social science students in qualitative research at St. John’s Medical College, Bangalore.
Dr. Margaret Lavina Fernandes is a very talented, dynamic personality with leadership qualities, selfless service, and known for her active involvement and contribution during her young days for youth through ICYM. She was the President of ICYM Moodubelle in the year 1998-99 and also has represented youth at diocesan, regional and national levels to the welfare of the Catholic youth. She is married to Dr. Ramesh. A, Associate Professor of ENT, at St. John’s National Academy of Health Sciences, Bangalore. They have 8 year old son, Priyank R.Fernandes.
