Fishing through country-boats in danger as the sea gets violent
As deep water fishing is out of question during the monsoon season, fishermen using the country boats usually carried on fishing in the coastal belt of Karnataka. However, in spite of inaugurating the country boat fishing season, the boats were forced to lie on the shore due to rough sea. These fishermen will not be able to venture even nearer to the coast for at least another week due to the violent nature of the sea. Usually the country boat fishing is carried on from 15th June to 10th August every year. However, this year the rough sea has not allowed these fishermen to carry on their livelihood. Even last year these fishermen had to face similar problems. It is estimated that nearly 3,500 country boats spread over the entire Karnataka coast at ports such as Mangalore, Malpe, Gangolli and Karwar are lying idle at the shores. This situation is affecting the livelihood of thousands of fishermen’s families who heavily depend on the country boat fishing during the monsoon season.
