Udupi: Deputy Commissioner P. Hemalatha on Saturday issued a notification declaring Car Street a vehicle-free zone with effect from February 1.

In a press release issued here, Ms. Hemalatha said that the ban had become essential owing to terrorist threat to the Sri Krishna Math/Temple.

Various people and organisations had demanded such a ban. Vehicular movement was disturbing the “rathotsavas” of the temple, she said.

The district administration had conducted many meetings with the public on the issue.

It had made it clear that vehicles would be allowed in the area at designated hours to help shopkeepers and banks in procuring goods and transacting business. Provision for vehicle parking had been made at different places, the release said.

Consequent to the ban, the administration will soon be changing the flow of traffic on roads leading to Car Street.
