Udupi: Theatre artiste passes away

Udupi, 24 April 2010: Theatre artiste Anand Ganiga expired after a brief illness during the wee hours at his residence on Friday. He was 73. He is survived by his wife, 3 sons and a daughter. The veteran theatre artist had directed more than 25 dramas on stage.
Acting career
‘Kaurava,’ ‘Karna,’ ‘Bheeshma,’ ‘Hiranya kashyapu,’ ‘Dushyantha’ are some of the characters that brought him acclaims.
He has acted in various drama and Yakshagana programmes for nearly 35 years in Akashvani.
He has played lead roles in two Tulu films ‘Koti Chennayya’ and ‘Pagetha Puge’.
He was an employee of LIC until he retired in the year 1996 after a long service of 42 years.
Ganiga established ‘Rangabhoomi,’ an amateur theater club and had taken up various theatre activities since its inception in the year 1965.
Awards
He has more than 100 awards and citations to his credit. He is the recipient of ‘Rajyothsava award’ in 2005, ‘Karnataka State Natak Academy award’ in 1994, Udupi District ‘Rajyothsava Award’ in 2005 and ‘Alva’s Nudisiri Prashasthi-2007’ among others.
