Abu Dhabi: Mangalore Konkans lifts ISC-ARAB Udupi Throw Ball Trophy

Abu Dhabi 24 June 2012:  Mangalore Konkans Dubai once again proved to be No.1 throw ball team in the region by lifting prestigious indoor ISC-Arab Udupi Throw Ball Trophy beating their closest rival Konkans Dubai in a thrilling match contested very closely.  The final match was played neck-to-neck whereas Konkans Dubai played a superb game.  There were tensed moments where Mangalore Konkans really fight very hard to get over Konkans Dubai and win the match finally by 15-13, 15-11.

 

The six team throw ball matches started with an inaugural function presided over by the main sponsor Shekar Shetty (MD -Arab Udupi Group of Restaurants) along with Mr. Sudhir Kumar Shetty (COO- Global - U.A.E. Exchange). The well known Mangalorean Social worker, President of Karnataka Sangha Sarvotham Shetty introduced all the six teams and Ms. Sheela Shetty carried out oath taking ceremony prior to commencing the matches.  The ISC Hon. President Thomas John delivered the presidential address and said that this year’s theme of the ISC is family get-together and all the programs and sports events are held on the spirit of the family. He thanked all the teams for participating and wished them good luck.  Mr. Sudhir Kumar Shetty also spoke on the occasion and said that the matches should be played on the spirit of the game and all team members must exhibit the sportsmen spirit while playing the matches.  Mr. Jayaram Rai (Group Finance Manager – Bin Fardan Group) was present on the occasion.  The ISC Hon. Sports Secretary Brijesh and Hon. Asst. Sports Secretary Ziad also were present and the MC laid out the rules of the tournament.

 

Ms. Shekar Shetty along with Ms. Ziad Kamarudheen inaugurated the tournament by tossing the first ball of the match.

 

The six teams participated in this tournament were:  Konkani Cultural Organization (KCO)  Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Karnataka Sangha (AKS), ISC Abu Dhabi, Mogaveers U.A.E. ,Konkans Dubai and Mangalore Konkans.

 

In the first round all teams had to play with each team on round robin league basis, the four teams made it to semi-finals i.e.  Mangalore Konkans, Konkans Dubai, Mogaveers and Abu Dhabi Karnataka Sangha.  All the matches were played in a good sportsman spirit and were closely contested.  In the semi finals, Konkans Dubai managed to defeat Abudhabi Karnataka Sangha and Mangalore Konkans defeated Mogaveers.  It was both Dubai teams that reached the finals. These two Konkans team who compete regularly at finals in major throw ball tournaments and fight for the top position.  However, this time Mangalore Konkans just managed to defeat Dubai Konkans.  All in all the matches were all electrifying and exiting and until the last point it was very difficult at every match who is going to win the match.

 

Two friendly matches between four men’s throw ball teams were held and it was a interesting to watch men play just to fill the gap prior to the finals.

 

It was a great celebration of victory by both teams, dancing together to the tunes of DJ music so on in a very sporty spirit.

 

A brief stage program was held to felicitate all the players who took part in the tournament.  The MC of the day Bijy Thomas invited all the guests/sponsors and the chief guest Padmashree Dr. B.R. Shetty (MD NMC Group) to the dais along with ISC Hon President Thomas John.   Dr. B.R. Shetty spoke highly of the tournament and said this is the first time an indoor throw ball tournament successfully and held in a true sportsman spirit.  He said winning or loosing is not important but participating and playing the matches in a very friendly and cordial manner is a must and that is what exhibited in today’s tournament. All the teams were invited to the dais and felicitated with certificates and gift hampers donated by all the sponsors of the tournament.

 

 

Prior to giving out the final trophies those who excelled above all were invited to the dais and honoured with special trophies namely:  Best Smasher-Mable Rebello (Konkans Dubai),  Babita Pinto - Best Receiver (Mangalore Konkans Dubai),  Precilla Suares Dsouza- Best Server(Mangalore Konkans Dubai), Precilla Pinto-Best All Rounder (Mangalore Konkans Dubai). They were given away by Sunder Shetty (MD Nihal Restaurant) and Sudhir Kumar Shetty (UAE Exchange).

 

In the the final trophies the runners up went to Konkans Dubai and were given away by ISC sports Secretary Brijesh and Asst. Sports Secretary Ziad Kamarudheen to the captain of the team Marina Menezes accompanied by all the team members.  They were also felicitated with individual trophies along gift hampers and certificates.

 

The final winning trophy ISC-ARAB UDUPI was presented to the Captain of Mangalore Konkans Irine Quadras by Mr. Shekar Shetty (MD Arab Udupi Group of Restaurants) accompanied by Dr. B.R.Shetty.

 

They were also felicitated with individual trophies, certificates and gift hampers.   The Mangalore Konkans also presented with the rolling trophy on the occasion.  Mr. Sarvotham Shetty thanked all the participants.  Sarvotham was instrumental in organizing the entire tournament most successfully and efficiently.  Mr. Shekar Shetty, the main sponsor speaking on the occasion thanked all the teams for participating in this tournament and promised that this tournament will be held every year with his support and he requested more teams to join in the future tournaments.  Sudhir Kumar Shetty also spoke on the occasion and praised all the participants in the manner the matches were played and it was a thoroughly enjoyable tournament by all.  Mr. James Mendonsa, President of Mangalore Konkans was present during the awarding ceremony.

 

Mr. Yogesh Prabhu (Ex ISC Treasurer) organized the entire tournament supported by Brijesh (Hon. Sports Secretary and Ziad Asst. Sports Secretary of ISC).   The referees who conducted the tournament were Melwin D’Souza, Jaipal Raj and SB Dey.  Ms. Cynthia D’Cunha refereed the men’s friendly matches.  The entire tournament was compered by a well known MC in ISC circle Bijy M. Thomas successfully supported DJ Music by DJ Rubin Thomas.

 

The sumptuous lunch was provided by ISC to all the players courtesy Foodlands Restaurant.  The sponsors of the this prestigious event were; Arab Udupi Restaurant, U.A.E. Exchange, Bin Fardan Group, National Transport and Contracting Company, Nihal Restaurant,  NMC Group, Foodworld and Chilly Willy.
