Congress consistently fielded a candidate belonging to Konkani speaking community, drawing either from Gaud Saraswat Brahmin (GSB) or Mangalorean Catholic Community (MCC). Of the twelve contests since the state reorganization in 1956, Congress won seven and conceded only five to BJP. [By Philip Mudartha]
