Udupi: Manipal Heart Institute Gives New Lease of Life to Babies Born with Congenital Heart Diseases

Udupi, 24 Mar 2013: Manipal Heart Institute IInstitute in Bangalore successfully does surgery on Congenital Heart Diseases (CHD) cases that affect nearly 1 percent of newborns. The surgeons are giving a new lease of life for newborns with CHD, said Dr Devanand of Manipal Heart Institute.
The living chances of babies who are below the age of 1 year and are born with closed arteries, hole in heart and inter-changed arteries is lesser. If such cases are detected within 4 months of pregnancy, such babies are given a new lease of life by surgeries within first month of being born, added Dr Devanand.
The surgeons at Manipal Heart Institute have performed 7,000 surgeries on newborns with 98 percent success. The newborns from Mangalore, Manipal, Goa and other cities are being treated in Manipal Heart Institute. The surgery costs from Rs 1.50 lac to Rs 2 ac with all medical expenses, said Dr Devanand.
