The Year 2011 in Review

By Crystal, USA

This year it was proved that the people had the power,
The many protests made the big men cower,
It started in Tunisia when a fruit vendor set himself on fire,
He was a symbol of repression that helped inspire.

Then, hundreds of thousands protested in Tahir Square,
The whole world watched as they fought without a care,
Finally, In February Mubarak resigned from his seat,
And by then other countries wanted the same feat.

And then in Libya social media helped lend a hand,
The proletariat finally got livid and took a stand,
They took over control and into the streets they ran,
Until finally they were able to rid of the horrid man.

Japan, this year has not been the best,
An earthquake, tsunami, and it seemed there was no rest,
Then a nuclear crisis made everything a mess,
And it caused all the nations stress.

India gained a lot of national pride,
Their name was known across, worldwide,
For winning the Cricket World Cup after almost 20 years,
Some were so happy, they even cried in tears.

This year 3 billion turned on their T.V.’s to view,
Every little’s girl’s dream came true,
The royal wedding allowed many to see,
The regal traditions being celebrated with glee.

Then across the United States many souls came to rest,
As President Obama came to the T.V. and addressed,
That they had finally found and killed Osama,
His life finally ended with the bitterness of karma.

In India, other protests for no corruption began,
Anna Hazare fasted so there could be a ban,
Many citizens supported his extreme views,
He helped make sure there would be no more government abuse.

The protesters movement stirred from Europe to NYC,
Where Americans sat and tried to make the government agree,
That they bailed out big companies and famous businessmen,
But they did nothing for the common man.

The death of Steve Jobs made many shocked,
From the iPod to the iPad; many technologies he unlocked,
He left an impression with his attitude and strong will,
And he can’t be replaced due to his high skill.

The year came to an end with Kim Jong Il’s death,
He oppressively ruled North Korea till his dying breathe,
He kept the nation secretive and his people naïve,
Yet the citizens of North Korea still grieve.

This year was filled with uprisings and motivation
Many citizens wanted their own democratic nation,
But what was so special about ’11 was the people it produced,
From nation to nation how protests induced,
The power was truly the people; they fought for their rights,
To bring their beloved nations to great new heights.
