Hassan: Operation to trap Wild Tuskers to Begin by end of Jan 2014 – Min Ramanat Rai

Hassan, 6 Nov 2013: As per the directives of High Court (HC) the operation to trap wild tuskers will begin at the end of January 2014, said state minister for forests and environment B Ramanath Rai.

 
Addressing the media persons at the Gendekatte forest guest house, minister Rai said that HC has issued directive to trap a total of 35 wild tuskers in the district which are causing crop loss and attacking farmers in the surrounding villages of Aloor – Sakleshpur.  The operation to trap the wild tuskers will begin at the end of January and complete by March, hoped minister Rai.

 

 

 
He further said that the state government has decided to dig trenches to curb elephantine menace by releasing Rs 30 crore, while in 2 to 3 years the network of trenches will be completed at a cost of Rs 100 crore.  A few tuskers will be held in different camps.  The elephantine menace can only be curbed by training the wild tuskers, said minister Rai.

 
The elephantine population was 3,000 in the past that has risen to 3,000.  Meanwhile, the state will award compensation to forest dwellers for wild animal attack under union forests Act.  Although, solar panels were installed, in order to curb elephantine menace, it did not work.  The fourteenth economic Plan will advance the funds for Corridor Project.  The state government has agreed to buy 2,300 acres from private landholdings. 

 
The district Congress Committee president B Shivaram, H M Vishwanat, H P Mohan, forest officers were present on the occasion.
