Manipura: Tree collapseses on temporary class shelter; Three children hurt, others traumatised

Manipura, 29 July 2010: The incessant rains and strong wind caused the collapse of ‘Bhagyada’ tree on the temporary structure where 25 sixth standard students, 13 boys and 12 girls were preparing for their Social Studies examination in the Government High School at Manipura, Dendoorkatta at around 12.15 pm on Thursday, 29 July 2010.
As there was no sufficient space for holding classes within the high school building, the sixth standard class was held in the temporary shelter within the compound of Shri Dhoomavati Daivasthana close to the school. When the mishap happened teacher Lalitha was in the class. Due to the impact of the fall of the tree, three students-Ashika, Irfan and Suhana received injuries while the other students were shocked and traumatised. On the instruction of the Headmistress,Niveditha B. the injured and traumatised children, 15 in number were rushed to the Primary Health centre at Manipura. However, to be on the safe side the Primary Health Centre officials sent all of them to the Government Hospital at Ajjarakadu near Udupi by ambulance.
The fire brigade from Udupi was pressed into action which rushed to the spot to clear the debris and the collapsed tree.
